Pregnant - with a tadpole
So, as I mentioned, I'm pregnant. To be precise I'm 3 months pregnant (or as the books put it - 13 weeks). This means the baby (Tadpole) is now about 7.5cm long and is due in the middle of April. The child has been nicknamed 'tadpole' after it's first early scan- where it had a tail. The tail has luckily disappeared and it is beginning to look more baby shaped. Tails are normal. Life is not echoing some freaky role play game.
In fact, life is remarkably normal. I have felt very little sickness and haven't been sick yet. I am feeling tired and a bit moody and this is why I've been a little insular in the last month or so. I've not notably changed size yet, but should start showing soon.
The scans are too early to tell what gender Tadpole is going to be, but I can't wait to find out. Not that I really mind what gender it is. I really hope that tadpole won't be too restricted by its gender. I will be very happy if my little girl becomes passionate about football or my little boy takes up baking. What I really don't like is refering to tadpole as 'it'. I don't want to feel like a 'thing' is growing inside me. I want 'it' to be a human and so I want to be able to refer to 'it' as 'him' or 'her'.
It is a wierd, exciting, scarey time in my life.

Big life changes
It's amazing - you spend years on this thing documenting not very much, and then when real life happens you are too busy to mention it.
Anyway, I got married and now I'm up the duff!!!

Free food
Last Sunday I went out with Dan's family on a guided forage - an inspired present from Dan's mum. It was great. We found Rock samphire (carroty herb) Sea Beet (Spinache-like leaf - great in salad) Alexanders - celery like stems, sea lettuce (green edible seaweed) and several kinds of mushroom.
I have now cooked and eaten everything and I loved it. It was totally great. Amazing how much free food there is out there.

Sick day
Taken my first day off work (due to illness) in 8 years.
I almost lost my voice yesterday and, although it felt a bit better today, I knew that 6 hours at the front of the classroom would probably hurt my vocal chords lots, so I've been mooching quietly around the house all day reading Phillip Pullman's the subtle knife and eating soft food.

[Link] | Thanks for all your advice and comments about weddings. My head is feeling in a slightly better place about the whole thing now. Talking to my Mum has also really helped.
So, last lesson of the year today. We played games and had some fun. I'll just get through the students exams and Dan's end of term show (he's playing guitar in a school production of Grease all this week), and then I'll get down to planning things.

What makes a good wedding?
I'm still over the moon to be marrying Rarg, but I'm now feeling daunted about organising the 'special day'. Obviously (because it's us) it won't be a very traditional day, but I can't figure out what will be different about it. I'm also not keen on getting out a second mortgage for it, so it will be on a manageable budget. I'm having trouble picturing the perfect day. I know every woman is supposed to have been planning her special day since she was 6, but I'm obviously not Bridget Jones enough to have got it down to any detail. Therefore I'd be grateful for any advice going. Please answer as many of these questions as you want to:

Can you tell me about a wedding you really enjoyed? What did you like about it?
What is the most tedious part of going to someone else's wedding?

They took the first few days of the easter holidays, and then me and Dan went away for a couple of days to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We stayed in a lovely gastro inn in the heart of Dorset. It was great - mmmmm Goats cheese salad!
The following day we went to visit the chimps at monkey world. We've been going for a few years now and you begin to know them. Eddie, the baby has really grown, and Hananya is becoming a fine leader. The Orangs were being particularly cute.
The rest of the holiday was spent pootling and enjoying the sunshine, and now it's back to work. Boo!

On saturday my nephew kicked me through his mummy's tummy. It was amazing!! Then his Daddy read some poetry.
Over half term we went to Oxford to see Rarg's friend Suzie. We went to the Ashmolean museum and then had dinner in the pub where Tolkein and C. S. Lewis used to argue about elves.
Sorry, I'm not posting as often as I used to, but my laptop hates LJ.

Non-news
Not much happening.
Went to see the starlings in Somerset with my Dad - but the starlings buggered off. Liz and beyond_bananas came round for games of cards. It was fun! Did the RSPB bird survey in Mum's garden. I recommend it. It was a peaceful afternoon. Won a pub quiz. Went bowling. Went to a birthday party.
It's all fun stuff, but not really earth shattering news. Life is pootling along nicely.

[Link] | Livejournal hates my laptop. It's official. Which means I haven't been here much in the last month. I've snuck on this morning before Rarg wakes up.I may not get onto livejournal very often any more and I apologise if that means I have no idea of your news. (Somebody let me know when Sorcha pops her cork).
Christmas was lovely. You know ... family .... food .... presents ... more food etc. You know the drill.
Incidentally, I will be singing some songs at Cafe Kino on 13th January along with the lovely Lacuna and Rob Allender.

The Best things in life are free
dr_midnite asked me to name 5 simple pleasures that you like most, then pick 5 people to do the same. Try to be original and creative and not to use things that someone else has used.
Funnily enough I was talking about this the other day with Rarg as we walked through the Forest of Dean, so I will have to say: 1. Autumn leaves.
2. Card Games ( whoever invented packs of cards was a genius - the possibilities are endless).
3. Coffee - work has just updated it's coffee machine and the froth on my cappuccino is now really good.
4. Thank yous - People saying thank you does make the whole - there's too many of us on this planet - thing much easier to bare.
5. Compilation tapes - I have compilation tapes from friends from years ago, and they still give me lots of pleasure

Amazing News
My little brother is having a baby, well, his girlfriend is having a baby. My bro is going to be a Dad! Which means I'm going to be an auntie!!
I'm wildly excited about it. It's totally time to have a little one in the family, and this little one will have such great parents. I can't wait to buy toys and babysit and be a small part of a precious little thing growing up. I'm so happy for them. I love my brother so much.

[Link] | Last Saturday we went on a mission to Mulcheney Abbey in Somerset to celebrate apple day. We tried about 30 types of apple, uncluding an Orlean's reinette which was my favourite. On the way back we bought cheddar from a farmers barn where they were pressing cidre apples. The heady smell of fermenting apples, orchards and strong cheese. I'm really enjoying this autumn.

It is really nice to have people over for the evening. Thanks to dr_midnite , H, [info]vanir, Bernie, Liz, [info]beyond_bananas , SJEsau, [info]loxodonta , TwoCsinak, Bernard and Miles the Munter for being lots of fun and making 2 lovely evenings. Those of you who haven't seen the house yet, give us a call and come soon. In other news, I sang backing vocals for Team Brick's album. It was in a proper recording studio. I only did about 4 takes. I have no idea what it sounds like . It could be horribly out of tune for all I know. I am nervously waiting it to see if I have made a prat of myself or not. Still, it was fun doing it.
